Natural Rights, Individualism, & Abortion

Recently, with the Planned Parenthood videos (which the videographer admitted to being heavily edited and misleading), the appointment of a new Supreme Court justice, and the shootings at the Planned Parenthood Clinic two years in Colorado, abortion has been in the news a great deal.

  1. In general, what are the relative strengths and weaknesses of individualist theories?
  1. Does it make sense to distinguish between abortion as a political right and abortion as a moral act?  That is, can one oppose an issue on moral grounds but still maintain it can be permitted legally?
  1. Do you think abortion can ever be resolved in terms of a natural rights approach to the issue?  And if not, is there a better solution than talking in terms of rights? That is, would a Kantian, or utilitarian, or a virtue-based approach to the issue be more productive? 
  1. How would an egoist approach abortion?
  1. If a fetus has a right to life, shouldn’t the fetus also have the right to the healthcare that s/he needs after being born?
