Anne Bonny – A Woman Who Chose Her Own Life
Powerful women in different nations have always been an interesting topic for me. Among Amazons, women-samurai, and other women dispelling a myth about the weaker sex, an image of a female pirate is the most exciting for me; in particular, I am interested about the story of Anne Bonny. I find the narrative about her the most compelling because it depicts the life of a person courageous enough to follow her own way in the world of patriarchy. Since her pirate career was short, she might not have become a role model for future generations of sea raiders. Nevertheless, she is known throughout history as an admirable woman who went against social conventions despite the pressure from her father, husband, and the public.
It is noteworthy that although Anne was a bastard, her background still offered her an opportunity for high social status. Her father was a respected person, and, therefore, it was expected that he would find a wealthy spouse for his daughter. However, Anne showed him that she had other plans and married a poor young seaman. Another example of her strength is when she left the husband as soon as she became interested in another man, a pirate. The fact that such behavior did not fall within the morals of the time did not stop her from plunging into pirate adventures. Even when Anne was arrested with her crew, she demonstrated incredible self-control expressing contempt for her husband's cowardice during their capture. Therefore, it is of no wonder that her personal integrity is highly appealing, while her identity may inspire artists to create extraordinary female characters.
